what miss jovi does when she is not miss jovi
- as told by sixth graders
Along with my students from the six grade, we created a zine that was displayed at the Sharjah Art Foundation, in collaboration with Vasl Artists' Association.
'When I was a kid, I sometimes forgot my teachers lived ordinary lives and apparently some of my students think that about me too.
A child's imagination is one of the purest and most fascinating spaces one can venture into. With the burden of grading and always having to study, students sometime lose that spark, and instead, rely solely on what the teacher tells them to do. I hoped that through this collaboration, they would explore their wild imaginations while they still are lucky to have it. It started out as a class assignment. It was completely open-ended, with me only giving a cutout drawing of my face for the kids to explore and create a scene and therefore, imagine my life outside school. There were a collection of sixteen drawings that were then compile into a zine.
As you can see, the results were interesting...
