'Still' -2016

Make a moment last.

Live in a space of still-time,

With no beginning

Or end. The journey never

Reaches its destination.

The imagery I have used in my work has been greatly influenced by the area that I have resided in all my life that is the Karachi Cantonment. While going through spaces within the area, I recorded videos as a form of documentation of the space. Although known for having political implications my interest lies in the ordinary visuals that we pass by on a daily basis and the ability to capture these transitory moments. What began as a harmless activity of following stray dogs around with a camera, led to an investigation of the numerous spaces as well as a recollection of childhood memories within the area.

The videos were then montaged to give a better view of the space under investigation. The idea of the fleeting ever-changing moment of space became more apparent by the ephemerality of the paper used to create the montages. Therefore, to preserve the moment, as well as the faded image, I scanned the pieces which created a new visual for the work.

To further enforce the idea of preservation, the images are placed in acrylic sheet boxes that allow the works to become objects. The irregularity of some of the shapes was informed by the montages that were initially created with the video stills and as these works were fragments, I used them as puzzle-pieces and created various compositions to give the pieces focus.

All work are prints of scanned montages placed in acrylic boxes.
