'Seaview' & 'Frere Hall'

These works revolved around the very public spaces that I had visited continuously growing up; Seaview (a beach) and Frere Hall (a park), places that are open for all. My memories led me to back to investigate them further. While going through spaces within the areas, I recorded videos as forms of documentation of the spaces, which were then collaged, and ultimately became my preliminary drawings for the work. My interest lies in the ordinary activities that happen here on a daily basis and the ability to capture these transitory moments. What began as a harmless activity of following stray dogs around with a camera, led to an investigation of the numerous spaces as well as a recollection of childhood memories within the area.

These paintings come as a result of the recorded videos, the actual elements from the spaces (like the sand of Seaview), as well as the memories I have of the place, be it recent or from childhood. I began experimenting with medium and produced collaged paintings and photo-transfers, which questioned how much my mind exaggerated the memories of those spaces.    The sand used in my work is physically taken from the area, which is another way to enhance the recollection of it. To further enforce the idea of preservation, all my works are places in boxed frames, making them a specimen of the space.

The body of work is, therefore, an amalgamation what was seen, what was taken and what was remembered.
